Self-esteem: a Complete Guide
Having balanced self-esteem is something that is still not valued enough
The self-esteem, or value given to each person for themselves, is fundamental to the mental and physical well-being of each one of us, as self-acceptance is reflected in every aspect of life.
Since we are born, our life sets us conditions to be valued. We will only be treated well, cared for, or respected, if we are obedient, if we have good posture, if we eat as and what they wish, if we study, work, if we have personal and professional success.
But what is self-esteem? How do I get high self-esteem? These are constant questions and at the same time difficult to be answered. But, let’s try to answer some of them on this blog!
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is the image and opinion that each one has of himself. It is built from personal experiences, self-image and the image that others have about us.
Furthermore, self-esteem is defined based on past experiences, influences, current behaviors and determines how future ones will be. A person with good self-esteem is able to relate better, to position themselves better in front of others and even to have more empathy.
Having low self-esteem reflects a series of behaviors that can, in the long run, be harmful to personal development. A person with low self-esteem may, for example, have difficulty saying no, develop eating disorders, and even feel inferior and incapable. If you identify with one or more of the following statements, your self-esteem may be low:
😓 You don’t think you are capable;
😰 Believes you are not worthy of your achievements;
🔴 If you think you are inferior, it is difficult to say no;
How to Increase Self-Esteem
People who have high self-esteem are usually stronger, resisting adverse situations because they believe more in their own potential of mind and action. But how to practice good self-esteem?
Here are 5 attitude adjustments that can help you:
1️⃣ Eliminate Guilt
One of the main reasons for low self-esteem is the constant feeling of guilt. Whether it is because we are not doing something or because of what we have been doing, it is very common for us to hold onto the feeling that we are to blame for the life we are leading.
However, try to eliminate this feeling, embracing more and more the lightness of being free beings and that, if we are acting in a harmful way for ourselves or for another, the opportunity for change is present in each new second.
2️⃣ Don’t compare yourself with others
The world we live in is sustained by competitiveness. This makes us believe that our own personal or professional success will only be achieved when we surpass other people’s. Leave all comparisons aside.
In this way, each being is as unique, complex, full of experiences, pains and happiness as you are. One person’s joy is not the same as another’s, as is suffering. When it comes to life, there is no basis for comparison: do what is good for you.
3️⃣ Don’t look for perfection
The quest for perfection can paralyze you. That’s why perfectionism is one of the most destructive habits we can cultivate. The fear of making mistakes makes us more unhappy and procrastinating and, consequently, our self-esteem decreases. This process repeats itself and becomes a vicious circle.
To break this habit of striving for perfection, dedicate yourself to doing a good job without waiting for the masterpiece. Life always presents new challenges and if you are waiting for the perfect moment, the right conditions, nothing will happen. Look for greater flexibility and deal with imperfections with good humor.
4️⃣ Take a daily break to appreciate your strengths
It may seem impossible to take a daily break to admire the qualities you possess, but it is actually quite simple. Take just 3 minutes out of your day and take a deep breath and search within yourself for three things that are worthy of your admiration. Can’t you think of three? Think of one.
You don’t need to think about something complex and grand. Start small and simple, but consider something important. It can be knowing how to cook a special dish for friends, being a good listener, taking care of animals, etc. Thinking about something positive every day will be a kind of daily fuel that will carry through to the next day.
5️⃣ Start Thanking
Being grateful has the power to cultivate better experiences. When we notice all the good that is around us, especially the good that is within us and in the actions we do in the world, we are happier and we are able to push ourselves towards better attitudes.
Self-esteem is like a flower that needs watering. Once you start providing water, it grows and speeds throughout your life in a positive way. Start nurturing this self-care and notice how everything gets simpler and more beautiful.
